Can I Transport a Washing Machine in My Car?

Washing machines, dryers and dishwashers are heavy, boxy and often just barely too big for a hatchback boot. Check your specific appliance against your specific vehicle.

What to consider

Measure the actual appliance, not just 'a washing machine'

Capacity, brand and type (front-load vs top-load) all change the footprint.

Weight matters as much as size

60–90kg is a two-person lift at minimum — plan accordingly even if it fits dimensionally.

Keep transit bolts fitted if available

This protects the drum from damage during transport, on any vehicle.

A hatchback boot opening is often the limiting factor

Even when the cargo area looks big enough, a narrow boot opening can block a boxy appliance — this is exactly what the calculator checks separately.

Can I Transport a Washing Machine in My Car? — FAQ

What's a typical washing machine size?+

Most front-loaders are close to 600×600×850mm (W×D×H), but capacity and brand change this — always check the specific model's spec sheet or measure it directly rather than assuming.

Should it be transported upright?+

Most manufacturers recommend transporting washing machines upright, and always with the transit/shipping bolts fitted if you still have them — this protects the drum. This doesn't change its footprint for a fit check, but affects how you plan the load.

Is a washing machine too heavy for my car?+

A washing machine typically weighs 60–90kg. Even if it fits dimensionally, check your vehicle's payload capacity (in the owner's manual or door-jamb sticker) — this isn't something FitTheLoad verifies for you in V1.
